Add automatic mode for barrier iterative refinement - #2284
barrier_iterative_refinement becomes an integer setting: 0 off, 1 on (default, unchanged behavior), 2 automatic. In automatic mode each solve starts without iterative refinement and switches GMRES refinement on once the iterate nears convergence, a residual regresses, or the step length becomes small.

starts without iterative refinement and switches GMRES refinement on once

becomes small.
The gRPC field changes from bool to int32; both use varint wire encoding,
so existing clients sending false/true still map to off/on.

The barrier iterative refinement setting changes from a boolean to an integer with off, on, and automatic modes. Automatic mode tracks solver residuals and step lengths to determine when refinement begins. The solver configuration, gRPC field, and documentation describe the new modes.
The setting uses integer values 0 (off), 1 (on), and 2 (automatic). The default remains on. The solver parameter registration, gRPC field, and documentation reflect these modes.
Automatic refinement state cpp/src/barrier/iterative_refinement.hpp
The new state tracker moves through off, watch, and on states based on residuals, complementarity, tolerances, and step length.
Barrier solves reset and update automatic state and use a shared refinement decision for KKT and ADAT solves. GMRES workspace allocation treats every mode except off as enabled; ADAT refinement still excludes dense-column solves.
NVIDIA/cuopt issue 2220: The issue concerns a mismatch between the documented default and the code default for this setting. This change updates the setting’s mode and default declarations and edits its documentation.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 3b981
Callers and config files that set barrier iterative refinement with true or false will now fail and must switch to 0, 1 or 2. This is an intentional change but is not yet documented as a migration note. Otherwise the change is safe to merge once that note is added.

Docstring coverage is 28.57% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 7 functions across 6 files. Document the boolean-to-integer change for barrier_iterative_refinement.
Existing calls that use the old boolean form now fail:
set_parameter("barrier_iterative_refinement", true) and get_parameter<bool>("barrier_iterative_refinement") throw Parameter barrier_iterative_refinement not found.
set_parameter_from_string("barrier_iterative_refinement", "true") and "false" throw is not an integer. Config files that use barrier_iterative_refinement = true fail the same way.
No bool-to-int fallback exists. Numeric strings such as "0" and "1" still work. Calls that use the integer type, including the gRPC decoder, are unaffected.
Since the integer form is intentional, the boolean form should not be kept. Add a migration note near the CUOPT_BARRIER_ITERATIVE_REFINEMENT entry in docs/cuopt/source/convex-settings.rst. The note should state that 0, 1, and 2 replace false, true, and automatic mode, and that config files and string setters must use these values.
