What: Closes #12363. Observe the outer Tabs container with the existing resize helper so scroll controls and the overflow menu update when a drawer or parent resizes. Filter height-only observer notifications to avoid resize feedback; keep window-resize handling for viewport-driven tab-width changes, and clean up both on unmount.

Validation (November 3): 52 Tabs tests and 15 existing snapshots, focused lint, and react-core ESM/CommonJS builds pass. Chromium, Firefox and WebKit checks cover shrinking and expanding only the container with a fixed viewport, recovering overflow tabs, height-only notifications, and browser errors. The new height-only regression fails before the guard and passes after it.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex for implementation and validation.

Walkthrough

Tabs now observes its container width and recalculates resize-related state when the width changes. It retains window resize handling for nonvertical tabs. Tests cover container resizing, window resizing, and cleanup.

Tabs observes its container and calls resize handling when its width changes. Tests check scroll controls and the scrollable class after container-width changes, verify that height-only notifications do not update accent styles, and cover window resizing and cleanup.

Tabs now update their overflow controls when a drawer or parent resizes. In a collapsed or zero-width container, though, the overflow count update can loop and throw a React maximum update depth error. Guard that update before merging. The remaining observer edge cases are minor.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(Tabs): update overflow when the container resizes" matches the main change. The raw summary shows Tabs now observes its container's width and calls handleResize on width changes, which updates overflow and scroll controls. The linked issue requests the same behavior, and the PR objectives describe it as observing the outer Tabs container. The title is specific and follows conventional commit style. The commit message about ignoring height-only resizing is a secondary detail that the title does not need to cover.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#12363] requires Tabs to recalculate overflow state when its container resizes, while keeping window-resize handling, and to ignore height-only changes that scroll controls can cause. At head e9a8a11, Tabs.tsx observes the outer Tabs container through getResizeObserver(this.containerRef.current, this.handleContainerResize, true) in componentDidMount for non-vertical tabs. handleContainerResize reads the container width, returns when the width equals lastObservedWidth, and otherwise calls handleResize, which runs handleScrollButtons and setAccentStyles. The window 'resize' listener is still added. componentWillUnmount calls the unobserve function and removes the window listener. The prior FAIL is resolved. The width filter now exists, and the new test 'ignores height-only container resize notifications' confirms that a height-only notification does not call setAccentStyles, while a width change does. The window-resize test and the cleanup assertions in the new describe block cover the remaining requirements. Two differences from the issue's proposed code are noted. The observer targets the outer container, not the <ul> tablist, and the width check uses exact equality, not a 1px tolerance. Neither difference conflicts with the stated behavior. Not verified: the tests were not executed in this review, and the browser checks named in the PR description are not represented in the diff.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff against merge base 59fa2ce touches only packages/react-core/src/components/Tabs/Tabs.tsx and Tabs.test.tsx. Tabs.tsx changes are the getResizeObserver import, containerRef and lastObservedWidth fields, the handleContainerResize width filter, a null guard in handleResize, the window listener and unmount cleanup, and the ref on the rendered container. Each change supports the resize behavior in #12363. The test changes add a 'container resizing' describe block covering width changes, height-only notifications, window-resize accent updates, and listener cleanup. These tests support the same behavior. No unrelated files or behavior changes appear in the diff.

Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 2 files.

Added a width-only guard for the observer notifications in e9a8a11, preserving window-resize updates. All 52 Tabs tests, 15 snapshots and Chromium/Firefox/WebKit checks pass. The previous CI approval expired before any jobs ran; could a maintainer help run CI on the updated head?

Outside diff Stop overflow count updates from looping when the tab list has no width.

489-489: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Stop overflow count updates from looping when the tab list has no width.

When the tab list has zero width, every tab, including the More tab, can count as overflowing. componentDidUpdate then adds that count to overflowingTabCount and calls setState on every pass. Each setState rerenders and triggers another componentDidUpdate, so the count grows without end and React throws a maximum update depth error. The container observer can now reach this path during a container-only resize.

Capping the value alone does not stop the loop. A class setState with an unchanged value still rerenders. The fix caps the count at the number of visible tabs and updates state only when the value changes.

Suggested fix
     const currentOverflowingTabCount = this.countOverflowingElements(this.tabList.current);
-    if (isOverflowHorizontal && currentOverflowingTabCount) {
-      this.setState({ overflowingTabCount: currentOverflowingTabCount + overflowingTabCount });
+    const visibleTabCount = Children.toArray(children)
+      .filter((child): child is TabElement => isValidElement(child))
+      .filter(({ props }) => !props.isHidden).length;
+    const nextOverflowingTabCount = Math.min(currentOverflowingTabCount + overflowingTabCount, visibleTabCount);
+    if (isOverflowHorizontal && currentOverflowingTabCount && nextOverflowingTabCount !== overflowingTabCount) {
+      this.setState({ overflowingTabCount: nextOverflowingTabCount });
     }

Test this with a visible tab list that has zero width, such as a collapsed drawer. Do not use display: none.

Update the overflow-count state logic in componentDidUpdate so a zero-width tab
list cannot trigger repeated updates. Cap the computed count at the number of
visible tabs, excluding hidden children, and call setState only when the capped
count differs from the current overflowingTabCount; preserve the existing
horizontal-overflow conditions.

Compare the observed content width.

If a fixed-width, border-box Tabs container gains padding, its content box shrinks but its bounding width stays unchanged. The observer fires, but this check skips recalculation, so scroll controls can remain unavailable for overflowing tabs. Compare the observed content width instead.

Update the Tabs resize-observer width comparison to use the container’s
content-box width instead of its bounding width, and store that same
content-width metric in lastObservedWidth so padding changes trigger
recalculation.

Reattach the observer when the container element changes.

If component changes from div to nav, React replaces the container element. The observer remains attached to the old element, so later container resizes do not update the scroll controls. Reattach the observer when the container ref changes.

Update the resize-observer lifecycle around `getResizeObserver` so the observer
is detached from the old container and attached to the new element whenever
`containerRef` changes, including when `component` replaces the container
element. Preserve the existing resize handler and cleanup behavior.
